Write for People, but optimize for both Google AND AI engines

Optimizing for Large Language Models (LLMs)—often called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or LLM Optimization—is the new reality. Instead of just aiming for keyword rankings, brands must now build undeniable digital authority, trust signals, and machine-readable content that AI platforms want to reference.

The fundamental shift requires adapting your online presence across four core pillars:

1. Build Entity Authority (E-E-A-T)

AI systems pull information based on collective web consensus, meaning shallow content will be completely ignored.

  • Create original assets: Publish industry surveys, unique data, and case studies. AI models are programmed to pull citations from the primary source.
  • Manage your “Brand Entity”: Use Google Search Console to monitor how AI summarizes your brand. Ensure consistent business names, addresses, and value propositions across your website, social media, and third-party directories.

2. Design for Answer Engines

Because AI responses are conversational and frequently zero-click, your content must be immediately extractable.

  • The Answer-First Format: State the core fact, definition, or solution in the first 1-2 sentences. Elaborate with context and examples afterwards.
  • Question-Based Headings: Structure content using H2 and H3 tags framed as exact questions (e.g., How does [Your Product] solve X?).

3. Implement Robust Technical Markup

AI crawlers don’t just “read”; they parse code for structural relationships.

  • Deep Schema Markup: Implement Organization, Person, and Product schemas so LLMs understand exactly who is behind the content.
  • Allow AI Crawlers: Check your robots.txt file and CDN settings. Ensure you are not accidentally blocking essential AI web crawlers (like OpenAI’s GPTBot or Google-Extended) from ingesting your material.

4. Cultivate Omnichannel Mentions

LLMs and AI search engines (like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode) synthesize answers based on trusted mentions across the entire web, not just your domain.

  • Digital PR: Secure articles, press releases, and backlinks on high-authority industry websites to cement your reputation.
  • Community Footprint: Because models train on public forums, ensure your brand remains visible and actively discussed on platforms like Reddit, Quora, and targeted professional communities.
