Nothing represents the importance of staying "agile" and adapting to change more than how much strategies, tactics, and successful track records have changed over the last couple of decades. 

I'm old enough to remember when sending faxes were 'the new thing' in marketing. Using email was mind blowing.

15 years ago we were able to rank page-one number 6 for a 1.8 million per month search term "Blackberry Apps". Just using a lousy keyword stuffed website promoting affiliate links and blasting out hundreds of crappy articles to PBN blogs.

That didn't last long, but it worked great at the time.

Not only are Blackberrys a thing of the past... so is article-spinning spam.  People using AI to generate content slop without editing don't seem to have learned that lesson, and any early success is vapor now.

As Google cracked down on spam content, we learned how to optimize Google Adwords...  for a glorious period of time it was possible to get a 40% return on ad spend ... every day...  no inventory... no customer contact... ah, the good 'ol days...

Then Google went to war against affiliate marketers and cancelled something like 10,000+ AdWords accounts in a single day, and cost per click went from $0.05 to $1.50 overnight.  

When the SpicyPress project first got started we were advising "Look ahead, people will be using mobile phones for internet activity someday soon." For a time Google fully committed to the 'mobile first' ecosystem of AMP accelerated mobile pages... and a completely separate index of the web. Google Web Stories came and went (more or less).

Today we're in the midst of chaotic market disruption as AI topples the Google Adwords money printing shopping cart.

Google is actually changing their fundamental business model. As the search ad sales revenue dries up they're going from selling ads to selling AI infrastructure support.  

Their previous business model is already diminished. Google Search existed to sell ad space. Most B2B searches are now zero click with no clickthrough to websites. Already, something like 50%, or more, of search is using AI results that don't show a list of choices... which means no place to sell an ad.  They're taking their profits from current ad sales and building infrastructure and data centers. 

They are also merging Google Search into Gemini AI and the whole way people use the internet will be evolving... again.  How Goggle Ads change, and get a lot more expensive, will be something to watch.

It's unclear how AI Search, along with all of AI, will be monetized to support the operating cost. AI business models in all sectors are changing rapidly too. Saas integrating with agents and LLM models is a whole new thing.

Human users make decisions in the blink of an eye... quite literally. And as AI Agents emerge people might not be doing that much search activity anyway. It's currently a huge security risk but AI agents using API connections will be circumventing the 'frontend' website ecosystem altogether. 

All this disruption underscores the importance of not chasing "the latest thing" and simply making sure your business information is organized and clearly communicates how you solve problems for people. Then use best practice, pragmatic strategy, and affordable tools to do the basic work. And pay enough attention to find and take advantage of opportunities others are missing.

We're not going to pretend we offer the best, or only, solution for you, but we're confident it should be part of the toolbox. This is a shoestring DIY operation.  We're motivated to help people but our business model isn't about charging for support services [hint to prospective partners if they want to talk about that].
